Already 5000 years ago the Egyptians have written on papyrus reeds with rushes. The Chinese also have written in 2600 BC with some kind of laquer and a bamboo pole. In the Roman Empire the Iron gall ink was invented but had the disadvantage when the paper decomposed with the age. The so-called "ink corrosion" originated. This type of ink have long been in use. When the first metal nibs were invented in 1750 the recipe needed to be changed because the steel springs rusted immediately with that ink. To date, the ink has been greatly developed and scientifically perfected so it has a perfect flow behaviour.

The Kaweco Special Fountain Pen Brass is standard equipped with a blank steel nib. As an alternative you can also equip the pen with a 14 karat gold nib. The surface is highly polished brass. The metal will change with time and get a patina. A clip can also be purchased for the fountain pen. The thread at the end of the shaft makes the cap's edges end with the barrels edges. When closed, a small rubber ring helps that the cap and shaft edges look nice in a perfect line.

The SPECIAL, as it exists today, has been developed fundamentally already in the 1930s. They were first made of hard rubber and later by celluloid. Today, the SPECIAL pencils are available in 4 different line thicknesses which allows you to choose between 0.5mm 0.7mm 0.9mm and 2.0 mm. The Kaweco Liliput Fireblue fountain pen is turned from a block of stainless steel with a CNC machine. As a standard, a blank steel nib is installed in the fountain pen. As an alternative, a carbon black coated steel nib, a rhodium-plated 14 carat gold nib and a partially rhodium-plated 14 carat Bi-Color gold nib are possible. All nibs are available in sizes EF, F, M, B, BB.

The LILIPUT series is one of the oldest series of Kaweco. As early as 1908 the simple design of these writing instruments, which were then made of hard rubber, fascinated. The Kaweco LILIPUT is made up of three parts: the cap, the shaft and the mouthpiece. With 97 mm in the closed position and only 87 mm in the open, the LILIPUT is the smallest fountain pen in the world for standard cartridges. By screwing on the cap, however, a normal, comfortable size is reached, with which one can write pleasantly.

In the beginning of the industrial age pens were made of hard rubber. Ebonite, as it was also called, was only polished. Even brass was already used for pen parts. But it was more for the trimmings such as clip and decorative rings. Only the cartridge technology made it possible to reflect on other materials since the ink does not directly and permanently come into contact with the metals. So in daily use the brass can develop its natural patina. Around 1550 brass was “cast” in a targeted way for the first time and thus offered a variety of applications.
