In the beginning of the industrial age pens were made of hard rubber. Ebonite, as it was also called, was only polished. Even brass was already used for pen parts. But it was more for the trimmings such as clip and decorative rings. Only the cartridge technology made it possible to reflect on other materials since the ink does not directly and permanently come into contact with the metals. So in daily use the brass can develop its natural patina. Around 1550 brass was “cast” in a targeted way for the first time and thus offered a variety of applications.

The Kaweco STEEL Sport Rollerball is made of brushed stainless steel. With the Kaweco CNC technology the body is milled from a complete steel block. The fountain pen is very resistant when closed due to the robust material. The feel of the steel is supple and the brushed stainless steel makes the roller look visually powerful.

The first sport models in 1911 were still round but the basic idea was the same. A writing instrument, which can be carried around in the bag without leaking. So the first Kaweco Sport was designed in pocket format. The highlight: By attaching the cap you could extend the writing instrument to a comfortable size. In 1935, the octagonal cap known today was introduced to the market in combination with the already round shaft. The fountain pen of that time was still a piston fountain pen, so equipped with a suction system for ink. Today's Rollerball works with refills but has still detailed design elements of a piston fountain pen at the end.
